The €150,000 Pathfinder Digital Scholarship is Open for Applications

Staying ahead in the global tech sector takes more than just keeping up. It requires deep, specialised research. To help build the expertise needed to shape tomorrow’s tech landscape, the Ministry for the Economy, Technology and Strategic Projects, alongside the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA), has launched the latest application cycle for the Pathfinder Digital Scholarship.

With a total funding pool of €150,000, this national initiative provides direct financial support for postgraduate and doctoral researchers pushing the boundaries of technological innovation.

Priority Research Areas

Rather than funding generalised IT studies, this programme targets advanced, focused academic inquiry. Funding is specifically geared toward postgraduate students whose research aligns with Artificial Intelligence to drive advanced automation and machine learning. Research in Digital Trust is also heavily emphasised to build robust cybersecurity infrastructures and systemic integrity.

Additionally, the scholarship targets projects focusing on Knowledge and Data Representation and Analysis to innovate how we structure complex data frameworks. A significant focus is placed on Technology for Sustainability and ESG metrics, bridging the gap between technical execution and national goals. The programme also maintains an open pathway for research exploring other emerging technologies that introduce disruptive solutions to the industry.

Structured Financial Support

The Pathfinder Scholarship is designed to mitigate the economic barriers associated with long-term, high-level academic commitments, allowing Malta’s top research talent to focus fully on technical breakthrough.

Postgraduate students reading for a Master’s degree can qualify for direct financial assistance of up to €10,000. For researchers undertaking complex, long-term doctoral work at the PhD level, the available support scales up to a maximum of €20,000. This targeted investment ensures that the local market continues to cultivate highly qualified professionals capable of filling specialised technical roles.

Application Deadlines and Registration

The application window is currently open. Eligible candidates must finalise and submit their research proposals before the closing deadline on 14th August 2026.

Academics and professionals looking to elevate their specialisation can review the comprehensive eligibility criteria, terms of reference, and submission guidelines via the MDIA website at https://mdia.gov.mt/services/pathfinder-digital-scholarship/
