Ħlejjaq ta’ Malta: Learning Our Language and Wildlife Through Play

Following a quick announcement just a few days ago, the first set of Ħlejjaq ta’ Malta, a brand new Trading Card Game (TCG), has officially made its debut today at AgriFair!

This project is a unique collaboration between GMR and Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights. Beyond the fun of the game, its primary aim is to educate the public about Maltese wildlife. By highlighting which species are common and which are endangered, the game serves as a vital tool for environmental awareness across the islands. It is an innovative way to bring the beauty of our national wildlife into the world of tabletop games.

The Gameplay

For those visiting AgriFair this weekend, the gameplay will feel instantly familiar yet specifically Maltese. Inspired by the strategic stat battling of Top Trumps, Ħlejjaq ta’ Malta challenges players to use the biological strengths of local animals to win.

Each card features beautiful, hand-drawn illustrations of species found across our islands. To win, you will need to master the four key stats listed on every card:

  • Piż (Weight)
  • Daqs (Height)
  • Ħajja (Lifespan)
  • Tkattir (Offspring)

Typings

The game categorizes our local fauna into eight distinct types, making for a diverse collecting experience. These categories are inspired by the many different aspects of the Maltese landscape, ranging from our traditional farmlands and lush meadows to the deep Mediterranean sea and our unique rocky terrain. Whether you are a fan of the coast or the countryside, there is a deck style for everyone

  • Farm Type
  • Meadow Type
  • Tide Type
  • Sunstone Type
  • Spring Type
  • Moon Type
  • Stealth Type
  • Life Type

Gaming with a Mission

While the game is built for competitive play, it serves a deeper purpose. Each card serves as a mini encyclopedia, featuring an educational description in Maltese for every animal.

By including information on how common or endangered each animal is, the game brings much needed attention to our local biodiversity. It is a clever way to ensure that as players trade and battle, they are also becoming experts on the environment that surrounds them and the importance of protecting it.

Don’t Miss the Debut: Visit AgriFair This Weekend!

Since the news of this TCG only broke earlier this week, this weekend at AgriFair 2026 is the very first opportunity for the public to see these cards in person.

The first set of Ħlejjaq ta’ Malta is available this weekend at the MFCC in Ta’ Qali. If you are heading to the fair, make sure to stop by the GMR or Ministry stands to get a first look at the artwork and start your collection.
