Rockstar Games has given us an extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI, showcasing real gameplay and revamped systems.
Missed the stream or don’t want to sit through a massive breakdown? We’ve rounded up some of the most exciting gameplay mechanics, improvements from previous titles, and interesting Easter eggs you might have missed.
Next-Gen Gameplay Mechanics
RDR2-Inspired Focus Ability: A new purple meter under your health bar unlocks slow-motion targeting. It highlights target points on enemies: red for lethal hits and yellow for disarming shots.
Smart Gunplay & Bag Mechanics: Your weapons no longer float in an invisible inventory. You sling long guns over your shoulder, and carrying loot bags triggers unique, one-handed reload animations.
Contextual Weapon Concealment: Approaching a store or NPC causes Jason and Lucia to hold guns behind their backs or close to their sides, avoiding panic before initiating a robbery.
Agile Hand-to-Hand Combat: Melee fights have been re-engineered with boxing-style combos, quick dodges, and grapple counters.
Dynamic Relationship System: Swapping between Jason and Lucia is nearly instantaneous. While playing as one, you can call the other to pull up as your driver, letting you handle drive-bys from the passenger seat.

How GTA VI Upgrades the Franchise Formula
Wanted System & Police Intelligence: The 6-star wanted level returns, featuring an active information HUD. Instead of standard line-of-sight tracking, police now actively log whether they know your face, your clothes, your vehicle model, or if you’re operating as a pair.
Vehicle Theft Mechanics: Gone is the instant smash-and-hotwire animation for every car. GTA VI introduces tiered vehicle theft, older cars require a “slim jim” lock-picking mini-game, while modern luxury cars require electronic key cloners.
Evasion & Cover-Ups: Instead of just visiting a Pay ‘N’ Spray, you actively manage your wanted level. Torching a getaway car, swapping escape vehicles mid-chase, or slipping on a new face mask actively clears individual police search markers.
Character Swapping: Drops the high-altitude “Google Earth” satellite zoom-out from GTA V in favour of instant localised swapping directly between Jason and Lucia.
Financial Economy: Replaces the single money display with a split financial HUD, clearly distinguishing between physical cash carried on your person and secure funds stored in your bank account.
Open World & Side Activities
San Andreas-Style Fitness Mechanics: Gym mini-games return from GTA: San Andreas. Lucia can hit the gym to build stamina and muscle, while eating fast food (like Chacey’s 30,000-calorie burger) refills your health gauge at the expense of your physical fitness.
Extreme Air & Urban Sports: Take to the skies for base jumping off Vice City’s tallest skyscrapers, hit public courts for playable basketball mini-games, or rent e-scooters and kayaks for low-profile urban exploration
Deep Marine Exploration: Scuba diving features vibrant coral reef ecosystems and requires managing a live oxygen meter on your HUD.
Gun Training & Shooting Ranges: Dedicated marksmanship facilities allow you to test weapon recoil, calibrate target acquisition, and earn skill bonuses.
Expanded Racing: GTA VI leans heavily into vehicular sports across Leonida. Players can tune up custom cars with neon underglow for late-night Midnight Club-style street circuits, jump into bumper-to-bumper 16-car GT track races with professional-spec vehicles, or tackle chaotic 12-vehicle off-road rallies that pit different classes (such as bikes, ATVs, and heavy trucks) against each other on muddy multi-terrain courses.
